Kansas City, Mo., is home to more than 450,000 residents and is the center of a metropolitan area of more than 1.5 million people. Kansas City is affectionately known as the “City of Fountains” because of the multitude of fountains located throughout the metropolitan area. Kansas City is also home to a variety of public art projects. The One Percent for Art program began over twenty years ago; the program requires that all new City buildings or renovations set aside 1 percent of the total cost to be used for public art. Kansas City also has a number of traveling exhibits. Avenue of the Arts is a program which displays six pieces of temporary public artwork each summer. The result is a landscape dotted with interesting sculpture.

Kansas City does not go to sleep after the sun sets. There are plenty of restaurants, bars, festivals and shopping to keep visitors and residents entertained. First Fridays in the Crossroads Art District allows visitors to stroll through dozens of art galleries while enjoying free food and drink the first Friday of every month. Opened in early 2008, KC Live! features several restaurants, bars and unique shops located in the heart of downtown in the new Power & Light District.
