Beat the Heat and Save Energy (and money!)

by April

Now that the weather is getting warmer, let’s start with ways to stay cool while saving energy and money.  These tips will help keep your house and your wallet comfortable this summer!

Solar Powered Air Conditioners

 • Buy an air conditioner with a high energy efficiency rating (EER).  A unit with an EER of 10 will cost half as much to run as one with an EER of 5.

• Make sure your air conditioner is the right size for the area you want to cool.

• If you have central air, clean any leaves and debris away from the unit.

• Install your air conditioner in the shade, or provide shade for an already installed air conditioner.  It uses more energy when it is in direct sunlight.

• If a sunny spot is all you have for an AC, there are solar powered air conditioners you can buy.  Get more info on solar powered air conditioners at: http://www.lennox.com/solar-solutions

• Clean the filter regularly – dusty filters make your air conditioner work harder

• Reduce air conditioning needs by installing an attic fan.  Hot air trapped in the attic sinks into the house, making it harder to cool – using more energy and costing more money to run that AC!

Anywhere you have constant wetness/humidity you will have mold.  There are numerous additives that can be found by the humidifier "filters" that will prevent mold and mildew growth.  You add this every time you add water.  You probably save the most at Lowes, Depot or Menards.
