Boston is the state capital of Massachusetts and an historic city of contrasts as well as the sixth largest metropolitan area in the United States. Marblehead, north of Boston, is a yachting center; other North Shore Region cities include Salem, site of the notorious witch trials, and the fishing town of Gloucester.

In the 19th century, Massachusetts was a manufacturing powerhouse, fueled by the textile mills of Lowell. Today, the economy is dominated by the service sector, and high-tech companies concentrated on the technology belt of Route 128 encircling Boston play an ever-increasing role.
